K é p a l á í r á s : This is the tenth piece of a 14-part series, utilizing the 14 statues featured on the two quarter-round colonnades of Hősök tere/Heroes' Square. Since all of the protagonists are major and significant figures in the history of Hungary, some Budapest streets are named after them here and there. The primary aim of this series is not to introduce the statues or characters (all are commonplaces frequently featured in touristic photoguides), but roads, squares and public spaces bearing their names. However, the ruling principle of this series working fine so far gets bogged here - there are no significant András streets (or Endre streets, as this version of the name is frequently used/changed in Hungarian) in the Budapest map. Frankly, one can find a single András utca in 16th district and an Endre utca in 10th district, but both are minor suburban streets, definitely not fitting the royal significance by any means. However, he is a well-known king in Hungarian history, ruling between 1205 and 1235, at least for three reasons: first, having returned from one of his Crusades in 1222, the noblemen of the era persuaded him to issue Golden Bull which included ius resistendi, the right to disobey the King when he acted not in line with the law. This formula and some other elements were serving more or less as basis of the constitutional system in Hungary up to the end of the 1940s (all this is represented by the golden object attached to a roll, held in left hand on his sculpture). Second, he married Gertrud of Merania, a queen killed in 1213 by Hungarian noblemen, who were jealous over the advancement of her relatives at court - the story is told in details in Bánk bán, an obscure tragedy written by the Romantic writer József Katona in the 1820s, set as an opera by the composer Ferenc Erkel, both belonging to the core of the cultural heritage of Hungary for 150 years. (The murder had remained unpunished during the reign of Andrew II, but the succeeding monarch, his son, Béla IV took his revenge on the death of his mother.) Third, he was also the father of Saint Elisabeth of Hungary, who was canonized four years after her death, and her legend is the basis of Franz Liszt’s superb Die Legende der Heiligen Elisabeth (but note that Liszt’s other oratorio, Christus is far better). - An extra addition, that Andrew II was also a well-known Crusader of his age, as the English version of his name tells. With the neighbouring statue of his son, Béla IV they represent a family connection on Heroes’ Square Millenium Monument, even if it was not so peaceful & harmonious as their statues suggest. The statue was made by Károly Senyei, and was erected in 1912 here.
I s m e r t e t ő   s z ö v e g : II. András (névváltozata Endre, Jeruzsálemi, Katolikus vagy Lovag András ragadványnevekkel is ismert) (1176 vagy 1177 - 1235. szeptember 21.) Magyarország uralkodója volt 1205-1235 között. Ő volt a 18. Árpád-házi uralkodó. Regnálása a magyar történelem egyik legnevezetesebb időszaka. Nemcsak azért, mert András igen energikus külpolitikájával az egész Balkán-félszigetet behálózta, és több szomszédos területet is meghódított, hanem mert a belpolitikában olyan intézkedéseket hozott - az Aranybulla kiadásával -, melyek - kisebb-nagyobb változtatásokkal - egészen 1848-ig érvényben maradtak.
